Easter shopping trends: 7.95% increase in the average basket value

Skroutz, the leading marketplace in Greece, has conducted an analysis of consumers’ online shopping behavior on the Skroutz Marketplace during the Easter period (April 21st to May 5th, 2024), compared to the corresponding period last year (April 1st to April 16th, 2023). According to the data, the average basket value reached €63, marking a 7.95% increase compared to the same period last year. The product categories that saw the highest average spending were Mobile Phones (€258) and Sneakers (€76). Notably, there was a substantial increase in purchases in the Sunscreen category (75.48%), with Mobile Phones following suit, showing a 32% increase in sales compared to the previous Easter.

In addition to the rise in the average basket price, there was also a notable increase in the number of orders placed through Skroutz during the period under review, showing a 21.43% increase. This trend underscores the shift of consumers towards online shopping. Furthermore, there was an observed uptick of nearly 17% in visits to the Skroutz App, indicating a clear preference for on-the-go shopping among consumers.

Consumer Financing solutions 

The peak of online shopping activity occurred on Monday, April 29th (Holy Monday), suggesting that consumers are increasingly opting for last-minute purchases, often utilizing services like Express Delivery.

The availability of diverse payment methods for online shopping emerges as one of the key advantages for consumers, as evidenced by their usage during Easter shopping. Specifically, consumers took advantage of the “Instalments for All” program offered by Skroutz for “expensive” orders exceeding €340 on average. Those who opted for Google Pay as their payment method made purchases averaging €50, while those who chose Apple Pay spent an average of €56 per purchase.
